What is Atonement?

 

Atonement is our life as Christians and as the Church of Christ. It is what we worship and it is by that we are saved.

The holy Apostle Paul writes about it: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God presented as an atoning sacrifice by His blood, to be received by faith.” And: ”God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an atoning sacrifice for sins, and so He condemned sin in the flesh.”

 

That “all are justified by His grace” means that the heavenly Judge declares all sinners free from guilt before His judgement, in the Word of salvation He has His Church speak to us, of how He has taken upon Himself the sin of all sinners, and His own judgement against it, crucified and presented to God for His judgement, and judged and damned for us, in our stead and on our behalf, so that all sin has been duly judged and damned in Him, and atoned for, our guilt dealt with and done away with and gone. And so He now, in His Word of salvation, presents Himself as our salvation, to be received by faith. And receive Him by faith is what we do in our worship, when we hear His Word of salvation and joyfully take it to heart.

We hold that the Bible is the inerrant and infallible Word of God.  We offer Holy Communion weekly at both services.  We ask that if you are a visitor to Atonement, please come and speak to the pastor before taking Holy Communion.

We confess the One True God found in the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds.
