From page 549 of the LSB Companion to the Hymns Volume 1 that teaches on hymn 544- “The succinct yet deep exploration of Christ’s life and work makes this one of the grand medieval hymns used in modern times. Essential elements of Christ’s life are presented objectively and didactically, yet with the subjective purpose for His incarnation explicitly stated in the repetition of “for us” (pro nobis), a key phrase also in Martin Luther’s theology. God acts for us, and our thanks and praise arise from His saving mercy and compassion.”

Collect for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost–

Gracious God, You gave Your Son into the hands of sinful men who killed Him. Forgive us when we reject Your unfailing love, and grant us the fullness of Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

(From the Table of Duties)- Of Civil Government- “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.” (Rom. 13:1-4) (5th+)
